How to Catwalk like a Supermodel
Supermodels, with their catwalk down the runway, can make us shiver, take us to a different world or make us want to be them! How do they do it?
Here are a few tips on how you can master that runway walk and walk like a supermodel:
1. Walk the high heels, don’t let them walk you
Walk in your high heels as much as you can, until you can run in them. Practice walking in different styles of shoes. You need to learn how to balance in any type of shoes and take a walk comfortably on a straight line. So, whether it’s stilettos or clogs or platforms, you have to be able walk in them because you never know what a designer or stylist will give you when you book a show.
2. Imagine that there is a string pulling you from the top
This will help your body positioning. Stand as tall as you can and hold your head up high. Push your shoulders up and then back, and angle the pelvis forward and upward. This might feel awkward in the beginning but with lots of practice, it will start looking more natural. Remember, you can tell a lot about a person through their posture. Good posture equals confidence and slouching equals self-doubt.
3. Tape the straight line on the floor
Walking a straight line, one foot crossing in front of the other foot is a must. You want to lead with your hips and extend your walking leg out far so you are taking strides, not baby Geisha-like steps. Always land on the toes and press your foot into the floor through your toe, then ball, and then heel. Don’t place the weight on your heels; keep it on the toe and the center of the foot. Extend your step, flex your feet in the heels and pick up your legs for every step.
4. Find your centre and direction
Pick a point in front of you that is slightly higher than your eye level and walk towards it. It will help you stay in a straight line and remain centered. Keep your walk tight, neat and narrow. Show purpose, strength and confidence when walking the runway by widening your normal stride.
5. Each step is a statement
Do not rush through it. Take your time; make sure that each step is in a straight line, balanced and makes a statement.
6. Be fearless
Your thoughts will show in your eyes and on your face. So think, ‘I am fearless and I am on top of the world!’ Before you know it, others will be saying this about you. If you should trip or fall, recover gracefully. Smile and keep going as if it never happened. Nothing will demonstrate your confidence like your performance under stressful circumstances.
